Diffusion and Osmosis
Hypotheses:
If osmosis is true and molecules pass through the membrane, then diffusion happens because the molecules/water spread throughout and can go in and out of the egg membrane. the speed of diffusion can increase and decrease depending on the temperature.
Materials. we used: Corn Syrup, 4 eggs, table salt, water, and vinegar
procedure:
1. Place three eggs in vinegar for 3 days.
2. Take the eggs out of the vinegar, the inner membrane should be exposed (as seen in figure 1)
3. Put the eggs in Hypo tonic and Hyper tonic solutions (as seen in figure 2)
4. The egg that was in the hyper tonic (corn syrup, far left in figure 2) should be mushy because no water could get into the membrane, The eggs in the hypo tonic solution (salt water, far right in figure 1) should have grown almost twice their normal solutions.
observations: The eggs removed from vinegar should have no shell,
and they have a mass of 96 grams.
They are much larger than a normal egg that weighs 65 grams.
Conclusion: I concluded that the eggs did what they were supposed to do and they shrink and grow when you put them into different solutions.
Relevance: We are alive today because osmosis and diffusion allow fluids to pass though and spread though out our cells there for, keeping them alive.
here are some thing related to this experiment that you might want to check out.
As seen in the next video Osmosis and diffusion can be shown in different ways.
